Canadians top pairs short program in figure skating worlds, tear history

Canada’s Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps lead the pairs competition after the short program at the World Figure Skating Championships. Stellato-Dudek, 40, could be the oldest world champion in any event in decades.

Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps scored a personal best of 77.48 in the short race in Montreal on Wednesday.

They lead defending champions Riku Miura/Ryuichi Kihara of Japan by 3.95 in Thursday’s free skate.

Stellato-Dudek was the 2000 World Junior silver medalist in singles for the United States. Retired due to injuries in 2001, returned to doubles in 2016, then moved to Canada in 2021.
