Callum Smith questions whether Terence Crawford can handle Canelo Alvarez’s size as he moves up two divisions to fight him at super middleweight in September.
If Terence shows some gumption by moving up to fight two or three of the predatory sharks in the 168-pound division, fans will know he’s up to it. Because Crawford doesn’t want to do it, they think he’s just out for the payday, and the fans get upset because they feel the same way. He got angry From their money.
Crawford is eager to fight the Mexican superstar, but he hasn’t done anything to show if he can handle the jump in weight.
Light heavyweight Smith, who shared the ring with Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) at 168, pointed out that Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) started his career at a lighter weight at 135. Moving up two weight classes from 154 to fight Canelo at 168 is a “tough ask” size-wise.
Smith isn’t completely counting out the 37-year-old Crawford, noting that Canelo is starting to show signs of age, but he still feels it will be tough for the Nebraska native.
Crawford hasn’t fought at super middleweight, has struggled to move up to 154 against Israel Madrimov, and will lose his one-year ring if the fight against Canelo in September happens. If so, he will be out of the ring for 13 months.
“That’s a great fight, both pound-for-pound stars and special. It will be interesting to see how the weight affects Crawford as he moves up (to 168),” said Callum Smith. Pro boxing fansAbout a possible Canelo Alvarez vs. in September. Terence Crawford talking.
“Like we saw with (former undisputed 154-lb champion Jermell) Charlo. He’s a great fighter, but he can’t really handle him (Canelo). Gaining weight is not a problem, but there is a natural size, and Crawford is coming from underweight.
“He’s a four-weight world champion. So, going to another two to challenge the likes of Canelo is going to be a tough ask, but (undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur) Beterbiev (in his recent close fight with Dmitri Bivol) isn’t getting Canelo. Any young man.
Crawford was at his best at 135 and 140 when he had a size advantage when fighting less-than-stellar opponents in those weight classes. At 147, Bud was slow and easy to hit, and it took a car crash to make Crawford look good, the inactive, injured and overweight Errol Spence.
Before that, he looked unimpressive in his welterweight fights against David Avanessian, Jose Benavidez Jr. and Jeff Horn. He seemed like an average fighter, better than those lower quality guys, but not like a super talent.
It is interesting how much attention was paid to Terence’s victory over Spain. The fans suddenly thought he was an entertaining knockout artist and that he wrestled like that throughout his career.
Crawford hasn’t looked like this during his career. If the fans had watched his entire career, as I have, they would have seen that he was a Shakur fan and counter-attacker, and that his knockouts were against older fighters.

He had a tough career and had injuries and stuff. As a boxing fan, I’m happy to see fights like this happen. Now I sit back and watch it as a fan. I’m looking forward to it,” Smith said of the Canelo vs. Crawford fight.
Canelo is declining at 34 and is not the fighter he was four years ago in 2021 when he held the undisputed super middleweight championship against Callen Plante. However, he is very big and strong and is a natural 168 pounds.
He’s four years younger than Crawford, who turned 38 in September and is coming off an impressive start against Israel Madrimov at 154 on August 3, 2024.
