Cacace To Vacate, Nunez & Rikiishi Fight For IBF Title

Anthony Kakas is rumored to be vacating his IBF super featherweight title to fight Ligue Wood. The IBF belt will be open for #1 Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez (27-1, 27 KOs) and #3 Masanori Rikiish (16-1, 11 KOs) to fight for him.

It makes sense as the 35-year-old Cacace (23-1, 8 KOs) is fighting former two-time WBA featherweight champion Leigh Wood (28-3, 17 KOs) to vacate the IBF title. Well done to Anthony.

Is it Nunez’s time to shine?

Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Nunez has looked impressive, knocking out his last 17 opponents since a six-round unanimous decision loss to Hiram Gallardo in June 2001. Jesus Martin Seika and Willmank Canonico Brito.

It’s hard to know how good the 30-year-old’s eight-year pro streak is because he’s mostly fought unknown opponents in his native Japan. He’s lost once professionally, but is under the radar fighting opposition most fans have never heard of. This is not a good sign.

Little chance of success

The 13-year-old professional Cacas had little chance of succeeding against ‘Sugar’ Nunez with the Mexican fighter’s power, youth and ferocity. It wouldn’t have been a huge payday for Cass to go out with Nunez, and the outcome could have been bad for him.

Last year, Kakas defeated IBF 130-lb champion Joe Corridi in eight rounds on May 18 in Riyadh. In that bout, Cacas was so fast and so busy that the fight was never remotely close. Kakas dropped CDN in the third round, and never seemed to recover.

Kakas’ last fight saw him defeat former featherweight champion Josh Warrington via 12 round unanimous decision on the September 21 card between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois at London’s Wembley Stadium.

I watched the fight, and Kakas seemed to take it easy on Warrington, staying in second gear the entire fight and not giving him the same rough treatment as he did in his previous fight with CD. It was a good sign from Kakas as Warrington looked fully fired up if that was the game. Cordina would have been folded like a cheap garment if Kakas had rushed him, as he had done all night.

“With Anthony Cacas expected to relinquish his IBF belt to fight former champion Leigh Wood, the featherweight belt is set to be decided by a fight between top-ranked Eduardo Nunez and Japan’s No. 3 Masanori Rikishi, I’m told. ” said Lance Pugmire. X.
