“I went from a very large city to a city with a population of no more than 1,000. I was shocked because everyone there knew each other, and most of them were related to each other. Any news was the talk of the day. If someone had a child, that child was months away.” Someone in town that day.”
“The day I moved in, I had at least 60 people stop the car and introduce themselves and help. I had at least a dozen people bring me food. Of course, they knew me by name already because my landlord lived in town and told Everyone rented the place to me.
The day after I moved, there was a funeral for someone who lived in the city. Every store (all three stores, including the gas station) closed for the day, the bar opened at six, and everyone in town stopped by.
But it was so boring – what it’s like to live in a small town, really Groundhog Day. One time, an old lady burned a pie and started a fire in her stove. I extinguished it with a fire extinguisher, no damage was done, and the oven is still working. But for three days, I was engaged in conversations about how the lady should cope. M must have dementia. She is usually a great baker. She won the bagel a few years ago. Her child needs to drop out of college and come home to take care of her, etc.
The lady was 65 years old and fell asleep. “The accident was nothing, but there was nothing to do but drink and gossip.”
