Edgar Berlanga came out of the woodwork last night to call out his super middleweight contender Diego Pacheco in his glory days following his win over Steven Nelson in Las Vegas. Berlanga posted on social media, which I want to give him “Big Payday”
A call from Berlanga, a native of Brooklyn, New York who recently hit Clot-chasingTrying to get some cheap publicity against Nelson (20-1, 16 KOs) against #1 WBO Pacheco (23-0, 18 KOs) in a top performance last Saturday night at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
Promoter Eddie Hearn said he would be open to a fight between Berlanga and Pacheco. However, Edgar seems skeptical, as if he doesn’t believe that Diego wants to fight. Hearn is a savvy enthusiast who knows the odds of a Berlanga-Pacheco clash are slim to none.
Berlanga’s cash needs may have skyrocketed after his successful title shot loss against the big purse unified middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. Like many fighters Canelo will face, he’s probably broke and will be looking for the same batter in his next fight. That won’t happen.
The Berlanga vs. Pacheco fight will feature a Puerto Rican vs. Mexican rivalry, but the match will not generate PPV buys. Selling for a fee isn’t worth it, and Berlanga asks Turki al-Sheikh to get involved to pay him the kind of money he wants.
Berlanga is said to want to fight the 39-year-old. Gabe Rosado Next in Puerto Rico to take advantage of the popularity in that country. After losing to Canelo, he was considered a hero. The Traveler Rosado is on Berlanga Street.
Berlanga last lost to Canelo Alvarez on September 14th via a 12-round unanimous decision by scores of 118-109, 117-110 and 118-109.
