David Benavidez
It’s a strange way to promote the fight and get fans interested, but Benavidez doesn’t seem to say much during the interview. And he is. They are still making excuses. For his offensive performance in his debut against Oleksandr Gvozdyk at 175 last June. It seems very weak.
Next month, Benavidez will have the WBC interim 175-lb title against Morel (11-0, 9 KOs) on the line on PBC on Prime Video PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
“You’ve never heard my name associated with steroids. You’ve heard David Morrell’s name associated with steroids,” David Benavidez told Xicana Boxing, referring to the unfounded suspicion that David Morrell has been tainted ahead of their February 1 fight.
“The guy who fought said they tested him, but they didn’t test David Morrell, and there was no drug testing after the fight. This is strange because there are always drug tests after the war. If I have something to hide, I want to tell people, why would I ask for an extra drug test?
“We had nothing to hide; That’s why we try to call it pure boxing. We are trying our best to ensure that there is no funny business.
“I’m definitely going to punish him,” Benavidez said of Morel. “As for when it ends, I don’t think about that. I’m thinking I’ll go in and work out my game plan. The difference between my last fight (Olexander Gvozdzic) and the fight (Radivoje Kalajdzic). I went in there with two injured hands.
“I had a torn ligament here, a broken knee and three weeks before the fight I had a cut with 10 stitches. So, I was already in a lot of trouble. The fighter I took was way better than the fighter he took,” Benavidez said.
“I think because of that, it shows that I’m a different caliber of fighter. Most people would cancel the fight if one hand was injured. I had two injured hands. I didn’t cancel the fight because it’s a big deal.
“Tank and I were fighting on the same card at the PPV, so if I had pulled out of the fight, I would have let the fans down. I care about my fans more than anything,” Benavidez said.
The ‘Monster of Mexico’ looked worse against Gvozdyk than during his one-sided win over Morel Kalajdic. In that head-to-head fight, Morel hurt his opponent repeatedly, and as the fight progressed, his body grew stronger. In contrast, Benavidez never hurt Gvozdyk and was exhausted after six rounds. He took a hit on his majesty.
Benavidez showed no signs of injury in his last fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15th. He was throwing full force punches with both hands and didn’t seem hurt. Benavidez looked bad in the second half as he tired, taking several hard shots from the 37-year-old Gvozdyk and hurting his body.
Fatigue has nothing to do with injured hands and everything to do with Benavidez not carrying extra weight well.
Benavidez initially made excuses for his poor performance against Oleksandr Gvozdyk at 175, blaming injured hands and a recent cut. Instead of making excuses after this, it would be nice to let the performance speak for itself.
