Coach Jose Benavidez Sr “20 year old boy”. Son, WBC Interim Light Heavyweight Champion David ‘The Mexican Monster’ Benavidez, defeats David Morrell on February 1st and fights the winner of a rematch against Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitri Bivol 2.
I’m not sure where Benavidez Sr. got this bit about David being “20 years old” because he 28 And it has many kilometers on its odometer.
I’d say it’s Benavidez. Close to 38. In the year He’s been pro since 2013 and is already starting to fall apart physically, with multiple injuries all over the place. Even though he was 20, he was up against it, with Cuban Morel (11-0, 9 KOs) in the main event of 23 days on PBC on Prime Video PPV.
That will be a tough fight for Benavidez, especially since he’s starting to break down physically from his long career with so many fights. He’s had a lot of gym battles because that’s his style.
Jose Sr. also revealed that Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) could move up to cruiserweight to face the winner of the unification fight between IBF champion Jay Opetaya and WBA and WBO champion Gilberto Zurdo Ramirez.
Jose Benavidez Sr Fight Hub TVSpeaking of his son David Benavidez, he needs to look good against David Morel on February 1st.
“This is the best war we’ve ever had. We’ve got a little fighter. It will be a hungry fighter and explosive. It will be very interesting. It’s a fight we need to showcase our talent and show David (Benavidez) boxing, David punching, aggressive, countering and cutting the ring to the world.
“So there’s a lot for the fans to see in this fight. David Benavidez is only 20 years old (correction: he’s 28). The plan is to continue, and fight David Morell, and get a chance with Bivol or Beterbiev and maybe Zurdo Ramirez. That’s the plan,” Jose Sr. said
If Benavidez loses this fight, he could forget about fighting the winner of the 2nd rematch between Beterbiev and Bivol or heading to the cruiserweight fight against Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez for his WBA and WBO titles. Jose Sr. has been drunk on his son’s success since he was 168 years old, fighting big and small fighters over the hill. So, naturally, Benavidez, who is speaking like his son, is going to walk through everyone and keep doing what he’s been doing at top middleweight.
The Mexican monster’s last fight at 175 against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15 should have been a wake-up call for Jose Sr. because that fight showed he is not the same guy he was at 168 at lightweight.
“We want to face the monsters of the division,” said Jose Sr. Zurdo Ramirez got another belt (at cruiserweight). Yesterday, we saw another champion, Jay. I think they can face each other, and maybe we will face the winner of that. Like I said. David is only 20 years old..
“We’re not afraid of losing our undefeated record, but we’re not going to do that. I’m sure he’s going to blow this guy off and go on to bigger and better things,” Jose Benavidez Sr. said.
I hope Jose Sr. doesn’t stick around if he sees Benavidez get beaten by Morel and all his plans go down the drain. This would have happened if Benavidez had fought at 175 instead of melting down to beat smaller fighters at 168.
This is a common thing we see nowadays, when young fighters fight in weight classes where they have no business competing. They can get away with it when they’re young, but when they reach their late 20s or early 30s, the gig is up. They are forced to compete in weight classes appropriate for their weight.
