Australians react to the smell of flowering

Almost 20,000 people have visited Sydney’s botanic gardens to catch the buzz of an endangered plant known as the ‘corpse flower’.

Dubbed Putricia, the Titan Arum Plant emits a putrid smell of “something rotten” or “hot garbage” for 24 hours after flowering.

The smell is the result of a chemical production that takes place in the plant to attract pollinators.

Endangered flower – Sumatra, Indonesia – Blooms only every 7-10 years in the desert. There are believed to be fewer than 1,000 plants worldwide, including those in cultivation.
