Australian Open 2025: Schedule, Draw, Bracket, Preview

The 2025 Australian Open marks the first Grand Slam of the tennis season. A lot has changed since the most recent Slam, the US Open, last summer.

Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, bidding to become the first woman to three-peat in Melbourne since Martina Hingis, has been seeded number one at the Slam for the first time. He took over the No. 1 ranking from Poland’s Iga Swatek in October.

Swiatek is the No. 2 seed. In November, it was announced that he had received a one-month suspension after testing positive for the banned substance trimetazidine, a heart drug known as TMZ. Anti-doping authorities accepted Suetek’s explanation that the positive test was triggered by unintentionally contaminated melatonin.

Coco Gough, the No. 3 seed, changed coaches after the US Open, then won the WTA Finals and recorded two straight-set victories over Suitek. Before that, Swatek had an 11-1 lead against Goff.

On the men’s side, Italian Janic Senna is the defending champion and the number one seed. Ciner is playing while the World Anti-Doping Agency awaits the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s ruling on his doping case appeal.

Cena tested positive twice in March for the anabolic steroid Clostable but a tribunal found him not guilty or negligent. Tennis anti-doping officials accepted Sinner’s explanation that it was unintentional: A physiotherapist used an over-the-counter spray to treat his own skin lesions, then massaged Sinner daily without using gloves.

The news came out six days before the US Open. Sinner then won the tournament on September 8. On September 28, WADA announced that it was appealing the ruling, seeking a ban of one to two years.

Novak Djokovic announced in November that he had hired longtime rival Andy Murray as his new coach. Djokovic, 37, is bidding for a 25th Grand Slam singles title (to break her tie for the record with Margaret Court) and an 11th title in Australia (to tie Court’s record).

Carlos Alcaraz had a quiet offseason. He is one Australian Open shy of a career Grand Slam. If the Spaniard wins in Melbourne in 2025 or 2026, he will complete the youngest Slam of his career.

2025 Australian Open Women’s Singles Draw, Bracket

No. 1 seed Aryna Sabalenka takes on 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens in the first round.

Sabalenka could face China’s No. 5 seed Zeng Qinwen in the quarterfinals of a rematch of the 2024 Australian Open final. Sabalenka could face No. 3 seed Coco Goff in the semifinals, which will be a rematch of the 2023 US Open final.

Gough opens against 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. Kennin won their last meeting at 2023 Wimbledon. Gough could face two-time Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka in the fourth round.

2025 Australian Open Men’s Singles Draw, Brackets

No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz and No. 7 Novak Djokovic could meet in the quarterfinals. Last year, they met in the Wimbledon final (Alcaraz won) and the Olympic final (Djokovic won).

Top seed Janic Cena is the only man to win a slam in the quarters of the draw. He could face No. 4 Taylor Fritz or No. 5 Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.

US Open runner-up Fritz is the highest-seeded American man at the Slam since Andy Roddick was No. 3 at 2007 Wimbledon.

In 2025, the Olympic and Paralympic sporting events will determine the favorites for the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games.
