Austin Cindric achieved Talladega victory, and he hampered Ryan Preece at the finish

Austin Cindric held Ryan Preece with 22 thousandths of a second to claim his first victory of the season and to give Team Penske his first win of the year, Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway.

It is Cindric’s third career victory and makes a winning line of 30 races for the 26-year-old driver.

“We’re talking about it in each of the meetings why we didn’t win one of these races, just very proud of the trouble,” Cindric told Fox after the race.

Cindric is the 10th different winner in the last 10 races at Talladega. He went 22nd in the points on Sunday’s race.

The key point came during the final green flagpit cycle. Cindric’s team had the fastest pit stop at 3.2 seconds on round 172 of the 188-round event to help him get to the front. He led seven of the last 17 laps. The race contains 67 lead changes among 23 drivers.

After crossing the finish line, Cindric shouted in elevation on his team’s radio, while Preece shouted in frustration on his team’s radio after missing his first cup victory.

“I’m happy, but as a driver you want to win,” Preece told Fox after his best finish.

Kyle Larson finishes third. This is his best result at Talladega. William Byron placed fourth and gave him five consecutive top -10s on Talladega. Joey Logano was fifth in a race for his first top five of the season. Noah Gragson finished the best sixth season.

Ryan Blaney ended last in the 39 car field when his car was damaged, while some teams delayed in the opening phase. Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch contacted. Blaney tried to get to the cars, but hit Keselowski’s car and ended the race for both.

Brad Keselowski finishes 38th. This is the third of ten races this season that Keselowski could not complete. He finished 26th or worse this year in seven of the 10 races.

“It was just a stack of guys who tried to get to the road as quickly as possible, and we were a kind of ham in the sandwich printed,” Keselowski said. “I waved down the back to let everyone know that I sat down and I came down from (turn) 4 and everyone was so tight behind me that I didn’t even have the chance to turn left.”

With the assurance of the restart, a tap from Denny Hamlin caused Christopher Bell, who led the top line, to turn in Chris Buescher, who led the inside of the track. Both shot down the track and hit the inside of the inside of the inside on the back. Both cars were eliminated.

Phase 1 winner: Kyle Larson

Phase 2 winner: Bubba Wallace

Following: The series chases at 15:30 ET Sunday, May 4 at Texas Motor Speedway on FS1.
