Brooklyn, Mich.-Alex Bowman walked away after sustaining one of the hardest hits in his career when his car hit the safer barrier in Sunday’s cup race at Michigan International Speedway.
Bowman ran outside the top 25 when Cole Custer and Austin Cindric contacted and sent Custer’s car to Bowman’s car. The contact turned Bowman and sent his car head-to-head into the safer barrier.
“It hurt a lot,” Bowman told Kim Coon of Prime after leaving the Infield Care Center. “It was probably the top of the board on hits I took, and unfortunately I had a lot of hits. So I hate it for the 48 team. Can’t really do anything except to think of ‘O (exploding), it’s about to injure really badly. “Hate it.
“It was a rough two months. I mean, honesty, we were pretty decent (in practice), I was pretty optimistic to start today. We got super loose and just had a long pit stop to make an adjustment to make it better and never really got a chance to chase again.
“Trust that my guys would have got the car better, and we could have come there again, but unfortunately, if you notice, shit gets pretty crazy, and things like that happen.”
This is the seventh time in the last nine races that Bowman finished 25th or worse. He entered 12th place in the points on Sunday, but will only achieve one point in Michigan with a 36th place.
