A year after the beautiful announcement of SHR, its drivers found new homes, success in the cup

Concord, NC -Chase Briscoe grew up a Tony Stewart fan, decorated his bedroom with stewart -memorabilia. So when Stewart-Haas Racing Briscoe chose before the 2021 season to drive the number 14 car that Stewart had, it was a special day.

“I thought it was the car in which I would potentially step out,” Briscoe told NBC Sports.

That changed on May 28, 2024. Stewart-Haas Racing, a four-car cup operation that won series with Stewart in 2011 and Kevin Harvick in 2014, announced that it will strike after the 2024 season. Among the 323 team employees looking for work, his four cup managers – Briscoe, Josh Berry, Ryan Preece and Noah Gragson.

“I was barking at the time,” Briscoe said. “Only the whole team closed. I felt like it was really my family. ‘

The dismissal of three high-ranking team Penske drivers, including Austin Cindric’s father, came after a violation of the rules with Penke’s Indycar program.

A year later, three of the four former SHR drivers were on a play-off match in the Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600 on Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“It’s just crazy how quickly things can change,” Berry said.

Berry won in Las Vegas for the Wood Brothers for everyone in March, but assures himself his first cup play -off match. Briscoe is 12th in points with Joe Gibbs that race near the center of the usual season. Sermon, 15th in points, also holds a playoff for RFK races. Only Gragson is outside a play -off match at this time of the season with the front motorsport.

Tonight, Briscoe will lead the field to the green flag for the Coca-Cola 600 after winning the pole. This is his second pole of the season after claiming the top position for the Daytona 500 in February.

“I think many people went to us last year as underperforming and now we have performed too much,” Berry said. “It just changes that way. The perception has changed completely. ‘

Jeff Gordon addresses Kyle Larson’s journey of the Indianapolis 500 to the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday.

Berry was strong on the 1.5 mile tracks, the same length as Charlotte car Speedway. Along with his victory in Las Vegas, he finished sixth in Kansas in the most recent cup race. He led in Texas when he crashed earlier this month.

Briscoe’s finished four times a best fourth season, including twice at 1.5 mile cuts, and it on Homestead and Kansas.

Three of Preece’s four top 10 finishes this season came on a 1.5-mile track.

The focus will be on Kyle Larson seeking salvation at the 1.5 -mile oval.

For Preece, the troubled situation at Stewart-Haas Racing was not new to him last year.

“My situation has been a one -year contract since ’22, ‘he said. ‘In the whole reality, it’s been a year on and on and on. It didn’t change me much. … It is very satisfying to be with this group (at RFK Racing). We all gathered at the last minute. Derrick (Finley, the head of crew) even joked about it, he said: ‘We didn’t choose the team, the team chose us. ” ‘

While Gragson had his fight this season, he will start eighth in tonight’s race. He had only one better starting position this season.

“I think we all fell into good positions with wonderful teams and I am grateful for that,” Berry said. “Fortunately, we all did enough last year to find the opportunities and come out on the other side.”
