Months after missing the chance to extend their PVL reign, the Creamline Cool Smashers hope to return to their champion form with Jia de Guzman back in the team

MANILA, Philippines – After two years with Japanese club Denso Airybees, Jia de Guzman is back in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL).

Fresh from her Alas Pilipinas stint, De Guzman shared on Tuesday, June 17, that she will return to her mother club, Creamline Cool Smashers, in the PVL.

“Of course, I’m going back to Creamline,” De Guzman said during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum.

The star setter, however, has yet to provide a timeline on her return, emphasizing that her focus remains with the national team.

“I went to a team that knows that I have responsibilities also to the flag,” De Guzman said.

“Right now, I’m very grateful because they’re allowing me to focus entirely on Alas Pilipinas because they know I have a responsibility to the country,” she added.

De Guzman has been one of the most decorated setters in the PVL, winning eight Best Setter award on top of back-to-back AVC Best Setter nods.

She last played for Creamline in the 2023 PVL Invitational Conference. At that time, she was the team’s primary playmaker in their first seven PVL titles.

De Guzman is expected to boost Creamline’s title hopes following their loss in the All-Filipino Cup against Petro Gazz last April.

But for now, De Guzman has her eyes set on Alas Women’s VTV Cup campaign later this month after their historic silver-medal run in the AVC Nations Cup last week.

Alas will then compete in the 2025 Southeast Asian Games on December, capping off the year.

“There is a lot of pressure to produce more results especially now that we’re reaching heights that we hadn’t reached before,” she said. – Rappler.com
