Age-old grocery store tips to “shop the perimeter” and avoid the middle aisles The healthiest food It’s possible that it’s somewhat outdated, and it also has the potential for shoppers to skip nutritious foods, two dietitians told Fox News Digital.
Advice to buy only produce or curbside from a grocery store is “outdated in a one-size-fits-all way,” says Charleston, South Carolina-based Registered Dietitian Lauren Manaker.

“But this approach includes nutritious, convenient, and affordable options found in the center aisles.”
For example, only “perimeter stores” would miss out on dense foods such as “canned tuna, frozen fruit and whole quinoa,” Manaker said.

“These foods are packed with nutrients, have a long shelf life and can be very versatile in your cooking,” he added.

She shared several tips for a trip to the grocery store, including planning meals before making a list, embracing it whole foods over processing and considering the addition of “superfoods” to the diet.

“Traditional perimeter buying advice is useful by integrating custom strategies based on genetic approaches and a deeper understanding of food labels can transform your food into a powerful tool for maintaining and improving your health,” he said.
Eating whole foods means “loading your cart with fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins,” Pobee said.

“These options are often more dense foods and rather than long seasons, they have to travel long distances and are usually treated with preservatives,” he said.
Instead of sticking to advice like “buy the perimeter,” buyers should take a more holistic approach, Manaker suggested.
