Michael Irvin: ‘We missed an opportunity’ to hire Deion Sanders

Cowboys Hall of Fame inductee Michael Irvin spoke. And he’s not happy.

In a video released on Saturday nightIrvin expressed his displeasure with the team’s decision to make Brian Schottenheimer the next head coach.

“We missed an opportunity here,” Irvin said. “I pushed for Deion Sanders to be the next coach. And I’m still standing ten toes on that push.”

Irvin isn’t satisfied that the Cowboys will sit at home and watch a pair of division rivals compete for a spot in the Super Bowl.

“We have two NFC East teams in the NFC Championship game tomorrow,” Irvin said. “All eyes on them. Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders. Our enemies on all fronts. . . And (in) a position we haven’t had in 30 freaking years.”

He emphasized that he has no problem with Schottenheimer. He opposes the idea of promoting someone from the last coaching staff.

“You’re bringing in someone who’s already been in there as a head coach,” Irvin said. “You lose things there that you can’t get back, that I care about.”

Irvin believes the Cowboys need a new voice to make a difference.

“I know what we need,” Irvin said. “They don’t have a curfew. They have no discipline. This year we were fourth in penalties. So how do you fix it? . . . How do you do that when you come from the inside?”

Irvin argued that the Cowboys don’t meet on Saturday nights before games. He passionately impressed upon the importance of it.

He’s also worried that if Schottenheimer tries to crack down, the players will buckle because they’ll think “we got you the job”.

Irvin, while still trying to give Schottenheimer the benefit of the doubt, is worried about Schottenheimer’s journey around the league.

“He played basketball in the NFL,” Irvin said. “He ran the NBA NFL. I call it bouncing his ass around 15 other teams.”

The bottom line, from Irvin’s perspective, is this: He believes Team USA will soon lose America.

“We’re about to get our nickname off the back,” Irvin said.

In the end, he summed up his experience of the past week like this: “I had the flu, and then I hit the doo-doo.”

Flu or not, many Cowboys fans are also feeling the doo-doo right now.
