Promoter Bob Arum says he won’t rule out former fighter Terence Crawford in a title challenge against WBA/WBC/WBO super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez if they meet in a September 12-round mega-fight.
Arum feels that Crawford’s (age 37, 39 KOs) ability to convert hits will give Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) problems the way Errol Spence did when they fight in 2023. It looks sluggish, dry and nowhere near the 2018 fighter.
Crawford’s turn to southpaw against Canelo may not faze the Mexican star as he has fought many left-handed fighters and never had any problems with them. If Bud switches to a southpaw, it won’t affect the fight at all, other than landing heavy shots while he’s in a different stance.
The real issue Arum doesn’t mention is that Crawford is too old, small and weak to wrestle at 168. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is hoping to duplicate the 14 pounds he made on the then 22-year-old Canelo. In 2013
That’s stupid because if that version of Mayweather were to fight Canelo right now, he would fall. Alvarez is now much stronger and more experienced, and will never settle for a catch at 152 pounds.
“I wouldn’t count Crawford out in any fight because of his special ability. He’s a great boxer, and he’s a complete underdog,” Bob Arum said. fight Terence Crawford when asked about his chances against Canelo Alvarez.
“Because you train to fight a right-handed fighter and fight a southpaw, it drives the opponent crazy. That’s what happened to Errol (when he fought Crawford on June 29, 2023). Spence trained as a right-handed fighter and all he saw was a southpaw fighter.”
“I think what Crawford wants is Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya,” Arum said of what kind of upset Terrence is looking for against Canelo.
In the year In 2008, when Oscar De La Hoya fought Manny Pacquiao, it was a different situation. De La Hoya was a part-time fighter washed up in his career at the time and was fighting at light middleweight. He agreed to fight Pacquiao at 145 and then put on excess weight on a diet. It looks terrible while creating the weight, and it was seen in the battle.
Canelo wouldn’t diet or lose weight for Crawford, and he’s not a part-time fighter like Oscar. Crawford is fooling himself if he thinks Canelo is going to be another De La Hoya. They are two different people.
Canelo will stay in shape, and won’t settle for handing the team a handicap like De La Hoya did with Pacquiao. Oscar never should have done this because he was the ‘golden boy’ who was the superstar in the fight and could have insisted Pacquiao move up to 154 to fight him. That was strange as De La Hoya bent over backwards to give Manny a better chance to even the playing field. By doing this, he weakened himself and lost.
