The Jets still haven’t made a deal with Aaron Glenn

Dysfunctional teams do do dysfunctional things, and one of the most dysfunctional teams failed to do something functional on Tuesday.

The Jets did not reach an agreement with Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, their first choice for head coach, before he left the building.

He is their choice. They are not his, for now. And the fact that he left New York without signing a contract is no different than driving out of a parking lot without making a purchase. If the candidate is to think about it, there is something that worries him. That gives him pause. That’s why he wants to let things unfold a little longer, without fear that the bird in his hand might fly away.

Fortunately for the Jets, the snowstorm delayed Glenn’s visit to New Orleans. With every minute that Glenn doesn’t agree to terms with the Jets, however, there’s a chance he’ll choose the Saints.

As for the Jets not being interested in Ben Johnson, word has been that the Jets don’t want to have to draft someone to take the job. That same mindset apparently prevented them from doing everything they had to to get Glenn to sign on the dotted line.

Not surprisingly. Billionaires who own football teams are used to having their asses kissed; they usually hate being the ones kissing kesters.

It’s also not surprising that Glenn may have reservations about working for Jets owner Woody Johnson, a common thread in a quarter-century of dysfunction. Given the choice between working for him and Saints owner Gayle Benson, I know which I’d choose. And most in league circles would probably feel the same way.

One interferes. Others don’t. One is impatient. The other is not. Decisions are reportedly made based on Madden’s ratings. Others don’t.

Perhaps Glenn realized after meeting Woody that the Jets were not the right place for him to start his career as a head coach. Maybe the Jets didn’t say or do enough to convince him that he did.
