The Dáil resumed returning Micheál Martin as taoiseach

Ireland’s parliament will resume on Wednesday with Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin returning for a second term as taoiseach.

35. The Dáil (Parliament of Ireland) will elect Mr Martin taoiseach (prime minister) to replace Fine Gael leader Simon Harris, who will return as tánaiste (deputy prime minister).

Fianna Fáil – the largest party – has since formed a government with Fine Gael and some independent regional MPs (TDs). November elections.

Sinn Féin remains the largest opposition party after winning 39 seats. Fianna Fail won 48 seats and Fine Gael came third with 38 seats.

Martin and Harris confirmed the new draft program for the government at the beginning of this month.

The agreement paved the way for the next government and was successfully ratified by both parties in recent days.

After his party’s program for government was adopted, Mr Martin said there was a “strong commitment” on behalf of his party to stand up for the people of Ireland.

“I assure you, we will spare no effort to deliver this program to the government to work hard for the people of Ireland, to improve things for people and to improve the quality of life as we navigate the very turbulent waters of this world.” he said

This is the first time the new government will sit after the November elections, with government negotiations expected to last around five weeks.

The new Dáil has already been a source of controversy after independent TDs including Michael Lowry, Danny Healy-Rae, Barry Heneghan and Gillian Toole tried to sit and speak for the government from the opposition benches.

The new Ceann Comhairle (speaker) – which is also an independent region – Verona Murphy, the first woman to hold the role, told TDs she would consider submissions against the plan, but allowed the group to “tentatively” take their original seats for now. .

All other opposition groups are against the idea, taking time away from those who want to have a foot in both camps and analyze the government.

As part of his return to the Dáil on Wednesday, Mr Martin will travel to Áras an Uachtaráin at around 1pm local time to meet Irish President Michael D Higgins in the state reception hall.

The president will then sign the appointment order and give Mr Harris the taoiseach’s seal and government seal.

Later, around 20:00, the appointment of members of the government will begin.

The President will sign the appointment order for members of the government and the appointment order for the attorney general, each of which will be countersigned by the taoiseach.

Then the president will give each minister his seal of office in turn.
