MELBOURNE, Australia — Goran Ivanisevic’s brief tenure as coach of 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina has come to an end after she pulled out of the Australian Open.
Ivanisevic, winner of Wimbledon in 2001, posted a brief statement on social media, saying: “Our trial period which ended with the Australian Open, I wish Elena and her team all the best moving forward.”
Sixth-seeded Rybakina, runner-up in Australia two years ago, was knocked out by Madison Keys in the fourth round.
Rybakina’s coaching situation is complicated: He announced just before last year’s US Open that he was no longer working with his longtime coach Stefano Vukov and hired Ivanisevic earlier this season.
Then, just before the Australian Open, Rybakina said Vukov would rejoin her team — and the WTA Tour said Vukov had been temporarily suspended, “pending an independent investigation into potential violations of the WTA Code of Conduct.”
Ivanisevic led Novak Djokovic to a dozen Grand Slam titles before splitting in March 2024.
