The President Joe Biden on Monday he issued pardons Dr. Anthony Fauci, Gen. Mark MilleyMembers of Congress investigated January 6 Riot in the Capitol and others, he said, are under threat of being targeted “without basis” for political purposes.

The wave of preferential pardons came a few hours before the President-elect Donald Trump – who has called some of his political enemies to be imprisoned — takes office.

“These public servants have served our nation with honor and distinction and do not deserve to be the targets of unwarranted and politically motivated accusations,” Biden said in a press release.

“I believe in the rule of law, and I’m optimistic that the strength of our legal institutions will ultimately prevail over politics. But these are exceptional situations, and I can’t do anything in good conscience,” he said.

The outgoing democratic president also said that he is pardoning the workers who served on the select committee of the House on January 6 and the police who testified before it.

Biden’s statement emphasized that pardons “should not be mistaken as an admission of wrongdoing by any person, nor should an admission be misconstrued as guilt of any crime.”

Fauci led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and was the face of the US response to the deadly coronavirus pandemic that Trump started in early 2020. Milley served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 2019, also under Trump.

In the end, both figures became pariahs of Trump and his Republican supporters.

Trump and Fauci also fell out before the November 2020 election, as the then-president pushed back against public health restrictions advocated by Fauci and other experts.

Trump in 2023 Milley complained about the betrayal after reports that he called Chinese officials in the final days of the Trump administration to reassure them about US political and military stability. Milley has he defended that call.

“My family and I are very grateful for the president’s action today,” Milley said in a statement early Monday.

“After forty-three years of loyal service to our Nation in uniform, protecting and defending the Constitution, I do not wish to take the time the Lord gives me to fight against those who may seek retribution for perceived wrongdoing,” he said.
