One thing has been certain about the opening of Monster Energy Supercross in recent years: it has been predictable.
In 2021, with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting major league sports, Justin Barcia outlasted Ken Roczen and Marvin Musquin at NRG Stadium in Houston to win his third straight season. When the series returned to its regular home venue of Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California in 2022, it made sense that Barcia would once again perform well. He did, but Roczen held on to the lead, and Cooper Webb finished second. Barcia stood next to them on the lower level of the podium.
Since then, different early-season riders have won, with Eli Tomac taking the top spot in 2023 and Pro Motocross and SuperMotocross World Champion Jett Lawrence picking up where he left off in 2024.
Despite often slow starts, Cooper Webb has been consistently strong in Anaheim’s first race with second-place finishes in 2022 and 2023, and a third in 2020. his bucket list.
Anaheim holds a special place in the hearts of Supercross riders. The facility has hosted races since the mid-1970s, and with a long season ahead of them, riders can focus on winning without worrying about points. Four riders are in first place with eight wins, and they are the best crop. Jeremy McGrath, Chad Reed, James Stewart and Ricky Carmichael capitalized on strong starts with dozens of wins and championships.
If a tie were to be used to separate these riders, Carmichael might hold the edge with a winning percentage of 42.11, but Reed would have to step aside because he has the most podiums with 27 and the most points with 813, according to Clifton. at Fowler WeWentFast.com.
Roczen’s victory was his fifth of 2022, and he was the most active rider this weekend. Tomac is the next most productive rider with four wins in Anaheim.
As expected from a development series, the 250 West division has shown even more parity with Anaheim as the opener. One has to go back to 2018 to find a repeat winner in Shane McElrath, who also won the 2017 race. Since then, Colt Nichols (2019 winner), Justin Cooper (2020), Christian Craig (2022) and Lawrence (2023) have moved on to the top flight. Last year’s winner, RJ Hampshire, won the 250 West championship and has only one year to defend before being forced to move up.
Haiden Deegan and Levi Kitchen will face stiff competition this week for the 2023 Pro Motocross and 2022/2023 SuperMotocross 250 champions.
