The driver who killed dozens in a car attack in China was executed

A man who drove his car into people exercising outside a stadium in southern China has been executed, state media reported.

Fan Weiqiu, 62, killed at least 35 people and injured dozens more on November 11 when his car crashed into a Zhuhai sports track in what is believed to be the deadliest attack on Chinese soil in a decade.

The divorce was prompted by Fan’s “unhappiness” over how her assets were divided after the divorce, according to the judge.

He was executed on Monday, barely a month after a court imposed the death sentence.

Fan was found guilty of “endangering public safety”, with the court saying his motive was “extremely vile” and the “methods” used were “particularly cruel”.

The attack was one of 19 unknown incidents across China in 2024, including two in the week of the Zhuhai attack.
