Jose Sr. said they could have fought anyone, but they wanted the 36-year-old Nelson, who was not a nine-year pro. He’s gotten off to a late start in his long amateur career at the pro ranks, but the 23-year-old Pacheco has the talent to win this fight if he goes on the chin. We saw Diego make a couple of close calls.
On the undercard, lightweight contender Andy Cruz will fight Omar Salcido in a 10-round fight. Cruz is looking to challenge WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson for the belt.
“You don’t want to face a fighter like Diego Pacheco. Canelo has nothing to lose and nothing to gain,” Jose Benavidez Sr. said. Sean Zittel As for Canelo Alvarez, he will likely agree to fight Diego Pacheco.
That will never happen because Canelo wants to fight fighters that come at you. Fighters who never looked that impressive. Diego Pacheco has good straight punches. He’s a young guy with good feet and power,” Jose Sr. said.
“He’s a good fighter. He is strong and boasts of his strength. That’s why we don’t despise Steven Nelson. We took him very seriously because he wanted the same thing that Diego Pacheco wanted. He wants to beat us to get bigger battles. We want to hit him for big fights. It will be a lot of fun for me and the crowd.
“We were trying to do an elimination with Christian Mbili. We signed the papers and he said, ‘No, he wants another fight.’
“We’re focusing on Steven Nelson while proving ourselves. He is a very dangerous fighter. After that we will look at our options. Right now, we’re 100% locked in to Steve Nelson.” Benavidez Sr. said.
