Why did insurance companies cancel their policies before the Los Angeles fires?


As proactive climate initiatives fall by the wayside within insurance companies, Nicole says there are ways people can get involved to help those living in vulnerable areas:

“Keep an eye on state bills that address climate adaptation, disaster resilience, or insurance reform, and support these efforts through public comment or by contacting your representatives,” says Nicole.

“Most states have insurance regulators that oversee industry practices,” Nicole adds. “Individuals can advocate for stronger consumer protections, transparency, and flexibility incentives through these bodies.”

“Join consumer advocacy groups — organizations like the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) or local coalitions often campaign for fair insurance practices and support climate adaptation,” says Nicole.

“And call for mandatory public disclosure of climate risks by insurers to increase accountability,” Nicole adds.
