Yes, $10 million doesn’t mean much For NFL owner.
We asked a question yesterday about whether teams would reach out to North Carolina coach Bill Belichick, despite his eight-figure buyout and his statement in his introductory press conference that “I didn’t come here to leave“.
Today, Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reported that the Raiders and other teams have “inquire“On whether Belichick will reconsider his move to college football. According to the report, Raiders minority owner Tom Brady recently spoke with Belichick.
Other teams are unknown. It’s also unknown whether Belichick will eat his words or not.
While Belichick declined to discuss the acquisition during the latest episode of Let’s go! podcast, he was asked if the door was open to returning to the NFL.
“No, I’m here in North CarolinaBelichick said. “I want to be in Carolina, and I’m excited to be in Carolina.”
Belichick supposedly explored all options in the NFL before moving his ass to Chapel Hill. His advisor, Mike Lombardi, said this before Belichick took the UNC job (and brought Lombardi with him):Where are the great jobs?”
Belichick has also periodically photographed the NFL model in general, complained that job interviews are rarely about football, and bemoaned the number of “Chefs in the kitchen“When it comes to running a professional football franchise.
Last year, the narrative was that Belichick just wanted to coach, and he wasn’t going to try to take over. The truth seems to be that he wants to make the decisions – or at least he doesn’t want others who don’t know whether they are making the decisions or not.
The Bears cast a very wide net. Presumably they’re interested in interviewing Belichick, if only to reinforce the idea that they’re turning over every stone possible. In return, the Jets rejected his offer before he took the UNC job.
That leaves the Patriots (um, no), Saints, and Jaguars. Considering that Lombardi took an apparent jab at Jacksonville’s chief football strategy officer, Tony Khan, by saying, “There are the sons of the owners who run the analytical department,” the Jaguars may not be interested.
Could he succeed with the Reds? Belichick has made his respect for Al Davis clear. His son, Mark Davis, with Brady’s influence, can give Belichick everything he wants and needs in order to succeed. And if that means moving on from GM Tom Telesco, maybe Davis will do it.
Then there is the question of why and how did it come out? Is Belichick hoping to hit the market for his services? Or is he simply hoping for an ego boost?
While the chatter could impact recruiting, if he sticks around he can point to it as evidence of his commitment to leading UNC. Which will come in handy next year, when the buyout value drops to $1 million.
