Ravichandran AshwinOne of the greatest batsmen in India recently spoke about his decision not to play the farewell Test. The 37-year-old has announced his retirement from Test cricket Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25He completed a remarkable career as he rewrote the record books and became one of the greatest promoters in the history of the game. Speaking on his show, Ash ki bat.Ashwin explained why he chose not to follow the ceremonial farewell match that many cricketers admire.
Ashwin expressed that he values honesty and respect over ritualistic gestures, stating that a farewell match means nothing to him if he does not really belong in the team. He stressed that playing just for the farewell would spoil the ethos of cricket and leave him unsatisfied. Reflecting his desire to leave the game on a high and with dignity, Ashwin believes his retirement comes at a time when people are asking “why” he is leaving.
“I personally believe that there is no need to have a farewell match. I just want to be honest. Think about it, if I get a farewell test but I don’t deserve a place in my side, I won’t be happy. Mere cricket mein dum ta, but I always think it’s better to stop when people ask why and why not. . said Ashwin.
Ashwin’s retirement brings the curtain down on an impressive Test career spanning more than a decade. The off-spinner finished with 537 wickets in 106 Tests, making him India’s second-highest wicket-taker in all formats, behind the legend. Anil Kumble.
