Norrie accidentally hit a spectator with a thrown racket at an Auckland ATP event


AUCKLAND, New Zealand – British tennis star Cameron Norrie has apologized and avoided disqualification after throwing a racket in the air and hitting a spectator at an ATP Tour tournament in Auckland on Tuesday.

Auckland-born Norrie was facing match point against Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta when he lightly threw his racket in the air. The racket hit a woman in the courtside box who was unhurt.

Norrie received a warning from the chair umpire and lost 6–2, 6–3 in the first round of the tournament. He reached the final in Auckland in 2023.

Norrie said, “I didn’t mean to do it but it’s still not ideal to do it and I didn’t do anything like that”. (Viewer) “Laughing and I just said, sorry, I didn’t mean to do that. And she said, ‘Yes, I’m perfectly fine.’

“It wasn’t a big deal. But as we’ve seen with some other players, you can easily default if it catches them in the wrong place or they’re not looking or something.

“I didn’t mean to do it and it’s totally not me to do something like that. I apologize too quickly and I want to apologize in general. I am not happy with the way I behaved.”

Novak Djokovic was disqualified from the 2020 US Open after accidentally hitting a line judge with a ball, and at the 2023 French Open Miu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi were defaulted after one of Kato’s balls hit a ball girl in the women’s doubles.
