On Sunday, January 12, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) officially announced the strong Afghanistan National Cricket Team for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The Afghanistan team arrives on the back of sensational performances in the last two ICC tournaments – the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2025.

On Sunday, the Afghanistan Cricket Board’s National Selection Committee announced the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy, which will be held from February 19 to March 09 across four venues in Dubai and Pakistan.
Hashmatullah Shahidi He will lead the team in the 8-team competition and Rahmat Shah will be the vice-captain. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ikram Alikil will be the two wicketkeepers in the squad and star player Ibrahim Zadran, who was sidelined with an ankle injury, is back.
Sadiqullah Atal, Azmatullah OmarzaiProphet Muhammad and Gulbadin Naib They are in the team along with superstar spinners Rashid Khan, AM Ghazanfar and Noor Ahmed.
However, Mujeeb ur Rahman was not included in the 15 player squad. As the spinner is yet to fully recover from the injury and the doctor has advised him to focus on T20s before returning to ODIs. Darwish Rasoli, Nangyal Karoti and Bilal Sami have also been placed as reserves.
In an official statement issued by the board, ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf said that following the success of the team in the last two ICC seasons, they are confident of doing well in the marquee tournament.
Mirwais was happy with the appointment of legendary Pakistani batsman Younis Khan as the team’s mentor and said the side led by Hashmatullah Shahidi is looking forward to making full use of his expertise. He explained.
“Afghan Atalan have performed exceptionally well in the last two ICC events, CWC23 and ICC World T20 2024. Series No doubt last year’s wins will boost their morale and help them have a better campaign this time around.
“The appointment of advisors has been invaluable to us in the last two events. Keeping this success in mind, we have appointed Mr. Younis Khan, who has extensive international and local experience, and look forward to making full use of his expertise during the event.”
In the same media release, ACB Interim Chief Selector Mr. Ahmed Sulaiman Khil said that spinner Mujib ur Rahman was not available and said that Afghans are used to playing in the conditions provided by Pakistan and UAE. He added that he expected a lot from the Afghanistan team and was hopeful because the players had shown great performance.
“Mujeeb ur Rahman did not turn up as he was advised by his doctor to focus on T20s to ensure full recovery before returning to ODIs. That’s why he missed the recently concluded ODI series against Zimbabwe.
“The conditions in Pakistan are similar to those in Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates, where we play mostly. Before we travel for the big event, we will conduct the preparation camp at various levels. Expectations are high, and I hope the team will prepare well and perform well like they did in the last two World Cups,” he said. .
