Gervonta Davis showed off his blinding arm speed today, working with trainer Barry Hunter on Mitts to fight for his WBA lightweight belt against Lamont Roach on March 1st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Davis looks great against Mitts, but his opponent, super featherweight Roach, has no power and is outnumbered in this fight. It would be nice if a tank could act like a dog and fight someone with the right skills. Then you’ll want to see him hit the mitts, but it’s yet another cherry-pick like all the others during Davis’ carefully managed 12-year pro career.
Tank Davis’ last seven opponents
– Frank Martin
– Ryan Garcia
– Hector Garcia
– Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero
– Isaac Cruz
– Mario Barrios
– Leo Santa Cruz
That’s a middling bunch right there, and none of them are lightweight-matched fighters, not one. So, it’s great that Tank Davis excels at hitting the mitts, but it’s not worth it when you’re facing marginal opposition at $75 on PPV. Those type of fights should be free because those matches are meant to be non-matching.
The tank shape resembles Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s former promoter in his workouts. But the two could not differ much in fighting style. Thankfully, Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) is more fun to watch than Floyd Jr.
Still, Tank has a lot in common with Mayweather in cherry-picking in addition to his athleticism. Floyd was the best during his career at picking them off and avoiding dangerous predators. Now, Tank is following a safety-first design.
Fans want to see Tank knockout Roach (25-1-1, 15 KOs) and then start fighting opponents who have a chance to beat him. Davis or his management always chose fighters that were popular.
You’ll want to see one of these sharks battle a tank:
– Shakur Stevenson
– Keyshawn Davis
– Andy Cruz
– Edwin de los Santos
– Vasily Lomachenko
– William Zepeda
– Bakhram Murtazaliev
– Sebastian Fundora
– Serhii Bohachuk
– Israel Madrimov
