[Rappler Talk] Autonomy interrupted: What lies ahead for Sulu?

Malacañang’s enforcement of a Supreme Court (SC) ruling removing Sulu from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has created uncertainty for thousands of public workers and stalled development efforts in the province.

As Sulu transitions to Region IX, or the Zamboanga Peninsula, concerns persist over how services will be delivered, how personnel will be absorbed, and how funds will be managed.

While BARMM is expected to continue its programs in the area until December, the long-term governance structure remains unclear. The transition has raised legal, administrative, and political questions, with possible repercussions for the broader peace and autonomy process in Mindanao.

Rappler Mindanao bureau head Herbie Gomez sits down with former BARMM interior minister and current Bangsamoro Transition Authority and Parliament Member Naguib Sinarimbo to discuss how the two Mindanao regions and the province of Sulu are being impacted by the 2024 SC ruling and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s recent executive order.
