Chris Ballard on Anthony Richardson: He’s got to stay healthy, he’s got to be more consistent

The development of Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson was a major topic of conversation in general manager Chris Ballard’s end-of-season press conference on Friday.

Richardson’s second season saw him continue to struggle with accuracy – completing 47.7 percent of his passes – while also displaying great arm strength and the ability to impact games with his quick ability. Richardson was also out with injury for the second year in a row and was benched for two games, which Ballard said was “sinking.”

Ballard said part of him felt the time on the bench should have been longer and that “in an ideal world” Richardson would have been on the bench “no matter what” to start his AFL career. He pointed out that these comments came too late and that the main issue is what to do with Richardson now. Ballard said “consistent form after relegation” is important, but it can only come when Richardson is well enough to play.

“The No. 1 thing we have to figure out and what Anthony has to work through is staying healthy,” Ballard said.

If Richardson can’t step up on those fronts, the Colts will have to chart a new course and it might not include Ballard either.
