‘You need to be tougher in facing life, and I think that’s what it did to me after losing my mom and dad,’ says singer-actor Ice Seguerra

MANILA, Philippines – There seems to be a tougher and bolder Ice Seguerra nowadays.

Set to release an album for the first time in a decade, he goes out of his comfort zone amid a personal loss.

The singer-actor, who is set to turn 42 this September, will also hold a concert, Being Ice: The Concert Experience, on September 12 and 13 at Newport Performing Arts Theater.

It will be Seguerra’s first concert since the passing of his mother, Caridad “Caring” Yamson-Seguerra, last June 27.

His father, Decoroso “Dick” Seguerra, passed away due to prostate cancer in 2020.

“When you’ve encountered loss, as immense as losing your parents, there is no choice but to be stronger, because there’s no other way to go,” the OPM hitmaker said.

“You need to be tougher in facing life, and I think that’s what it did to me after losing my mom and dad,” he continued.

Seguerra, who last released Araw Gabi: Mga Awit ni Maestro Ryan in 2015, is set to unveil Being Ice, an album featuring all original compositions, on online streaming services on August 8.

According to Seguerra, there’s also a plan to release the songs physically on vinyl soon.

“The pressure to deliver my best will always be there, I think that’s the standard I’ve set for myself, but I think it’s more of being open enough,” Seguerra told Rappler.

“It’s because, for the longest time, I felt like I was very guarded, especially when it comes to my real emotions, when it comes to my real stories,” he added.

“I’m very proud of this step because I feel I was able to do that, to be freer to be myself, to just do the things that I was scared to do.”

Seguerra has already released three singles from the album — “Shelter of the Broken,” “‘Wag Na Lang Pala,” and “Nandiyan Ka.”

The three songs, along with five other new tracks, chronicle Seguerra’s journey through all forms of love and grief.

In the September concert, Gary Valenciano will join Seguerra for a fun first night, while Vic Sotto will guest on the second night, which will be more introspective and intimate.

“I admit that I wasn’t as courageous as now…and whatever happens, if this album flies, I’d be very happy, and if it doesn’t then I’ll just make a new one,” he said. “I don’t see it as the end all, be all of life.” – Rappler.com
