David Benavidez appears to be making excuses by claiming that his rival WBA ‘Regular’ Light Heavyweight Champion David Morrell wants to be drug tested by VADA. The two are fighting at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Prime Video PPV on Feb. 1 on PBC.
In an interview, Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) went on to talk about Morel (11-0, 9 KOs) and his drug test, and spoke in support of two of his victims, Sena Agbeko and Calvin Henderson. His argument.
Like Benavidez, 28, he seems to be muddying the waters if he loses to Morel. If Benavidez is beaten, the fans will not come down hard on him and abandon the ship because of suspicions about Morel’s drug use. He gives the ‘Mexican Monster’ a free pass to escape the backlash he usually gets from losing to the Cuban Morel.
“Morel submitted his VADA paperwork at the end of November, 1 day before Benavidez.. #TheTruth,” said Keith Idek. X.
It’s a shame that Benavidez keeps talking about his doubts about Morel, because it spoils the game and reduces interest. But for Benavidez, if something goes wrong and he’s outpointed or outmatched, he’s given a built-in excuse.
Benavidez’s no-nonsense fighting style, loading up on every punch, puts him in danger of being knocked out by Morel. In his last fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk, he was getting hit a lot and was fighting like that and the Ukrainian fighter was lucky to push the shots instead of putting the maximum power in his way.
In the second half of that fight, Gvozdyk repeatedly took advantage of Benavidez’s careless style and nailed him with hard shots. In the 12th round, he hurt Benavidez with a punch to his soft midsection and completely shut him down for the last 30 seconds. Benavidez didn’t throw anything that round after being hit by a right hand from Gvozdyk into the breadbasket.
“It’s not an excuse, but it brings up a lot of questions when you go through other fighters who say, ‘Hey, I’ve been tested by VADA, but David Morrell hasn’t,'” David Benavidez said. MediaDavid Morrell has raised suspicions that he is a dirty fighter ahead of their February 1 fight.
“I’m not the only one who said this. There were two other fighters (former Morel knockout victims Senna Agbeko and Calvin Henderson). We are talking about Agbeko. He says the entire camp was tested. David Morrell wasn’t tested and they didn’t do any drug testing after the fight which was strange to me.
“I don’t care about that. Even if he (Morell) is on steroids, I’ll beat the s*** out of him, but if you’re a dirty fighter, you’re going to be exposed. That’s why they’re making a big deal out of it. They don’t want to try, but dirty warriors are exposed in the game. It’s not good for the sport, and it’s not good for people to use steroids. So, I’m not going to let that s*** slide,” Benavidez said.
It is very disappointing to see Benavidez constantly refer to the drug test, making it clear that he is planting excuses in the minds of fans before his fight with Morel. The Cuban believes that this is a sign that Benavidez is “scared” of him.
“We are being tested because I am putting pressure on VADA by saying, ‘We have to try.’ We must try.’ These are high-caliber fights that require a challenge. When I fought Caleb Plant and I fought Demetrius Andrade, we tested 14 weeks. For this, we have just started a nine-week trial.
“I’m not asking for something I didn’t do myself. I was checked by VADA more than anyone else,” said Benavidez.
