NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines – Seven people died, while 18 others were hurt, five in critical condition, following a road crash that happened in Sitio San Juan, Brgy. Guimbalaon, Silay City, Negros Occidental, Friday morning, June 27.

The road mishap happened at 9:30 am Friday when the mini dump truck, owned by the city government of Silay, encountered brake trouble and turned on its side. The driver of truck was identified as Hernane Masa,  53, of Sitio Embang, Barangay E. Lopez in the city.

Lieutenant Colonel Mark Anthony Darroca, chief of Silay Component City Police Office, identified the fatalities as:

  • Alexander Balili, 62, of  Antilla Subdivision, Brgy. IV;
  • Rafael M Jardiolin Jr, 57 of Abad Santos, Brgy. V;
  • Eldie N Naguita, 65, of Brgy. E Lopez;
  • Richer Dimson, 52 of Seaview Subdivision, Brgy. Guinhalaran;
  • Leonillo Jerson, 38, of La Purisima, Brgy. E Lopez;
  • Marlon Amarado, 36, of Barangay Mambulac; and
  • Jayme Bangis, 60, of Barangay Guinhalaran.

Except for Amarado and Bangis, the five other fatalities, all city employees, were declared dead on arrival at Teresita Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City.

Amarado and Bangis were declared dead at around 4 pm while being treated at the Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City.

Twenty others were also hurt with five of them in critical condition in the said hospital, the police report added.

Silay Mayor Joedith Gallego said, “The tragic incident brought immeasureable grief to the whole Silay community.”

The mayor vowed an in-depth probe on the incident.

For the meantime, he said, “It is now a moment for collective mourning among Silaynons.”
