“An American who now lives in Canada. My baby girl was born in the United States with many digestive problems, and had to undergo two major operations in her first month, with a total value of about half a million US dollars.
“The result of my daughter’s problems meant she developed liver disease. No terrible external difficulties, really, but her medication would cost me $80-$300 a month (even across 3 different ‘top tier’ insurance plans). Every time I dealt with her I got… Medication, I felt so sad and guilty for the thousands and millions of people who need medication and can’t afford it.
After several years, we quickly moved to Canada. Liver medication is now $10, which is good. But then we found out she had a tumor in her brain. So she had brain surgery, had it removed, and had all the follow-up tests to find out, thankfully, that it wasn’t cancer. She gets an MRI annually to be safe, and everything seems fine now.
After all the care she received, we didn’t even get a statement or anything from the hospital. I kept waiting for something, anything, to come in the mail. Item breakdown of how things are covered. Information I may need for my taxes. Something. But what made me very happy was that there was nothing. I didn’t have to think about the financial side of it at all.
The amount of peace of mind it brings cannot be overstated.”
