The opening round of the 2025 Monster Energy Supercross season was a reminder of why the race is being run.
No one expected Jett Lawrence or Haiden Deegan to struggle, and then they fell in the first round, and the story of the West Coast Swing changed. Chase Sexton won Anaheim 1 at Angel Stadium, and Eli Tomac finished fifth, so they won’t have to look over their shoulders in Round 2 at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.
The San Diego Supercross schedule appeared in 1980 at San Diego Stadium and remained there through two name changes until 1997. It was replaced by Petco Park from 2014 to 2022 and has now, for the past two seasons, been the site of old Jack. Murphy Stadium, it comes full circle.
Since 2016, when Ryan Dungey won his second consecutive Supercross race in San Diego, only one rider has won multiple victories: Tomac was victorious in 2019 and 2023. He wants to prove that his speed in last week’s preliminaries was no fluke. his 1st lap crash, he would win by a wide margin. But those are Tomac’s only wins in San Diego, which has been the site of some emotional podiums in the past.
Aaron Plessinger’s first Supercross win topped the list of dramatic finishes last year. Sexton’s victory in Anaheim underscores the strength of Red Bull KTM, so Plessinger cannot be overlooked.
Cooper Webb also demands attention. He missed the grid with a fourth-place finish last week, and three of his previous four attempts at San Diego have ended on the podium, including a win in 2020. Lawrence knows Webb, Sexton, Tomac and the rest of last week’s nominees. doesn’t make many mistakes, and they need to capitalize on their 12th place Anaheim 1 result with a strong performance on I5 South.
By winning the opening round, Sexton earned the Supercross red plate for the fourth time in his career. According to Clinton Fowler WeWentFast.comhe has never held more than one week at a time, including when he lost in San Diego in 2024. However, Sexton’s recent starts say a lot about how he will run throughout the season. In 2021, he finished 14th in the Houston opener and 12th in points at the end of the year. In 2022, he was fifth at Anaheim 1 and sixth in points, and third-place finishes have turned into top-three finishes in the past two years, including the 2023 series title.
Plessinger gets redemption with a 450 win at SD
Aaron Plessinger can’t contain his excitement about getting his first 450SX win and talks about getting over his heartbreaking loss in Detroit last year.
As for Lawrence, it looks like it’s not time to worry about him yet. Ricky Carmichael finished 20th in the 2002 season opener and won the title. Ryan Villopoto was 16th before taking the top spot in 2013, so Lawrence can easily surpass his 12th-place finish.
Jo Shimoda’s win last week in the 250 class was his first win of the season, and he hopes it bodes well for his season. Through three championships in the 2024 SuperMotocross League, Shimoda had a humble beginning and steadily improved. He’s happy to have this little cushion over Deegan after a lap 1 crash that saw him finish a distant fifth last week.
The Anaheim 1 250 West podium was filled with big stories. Julie Beaumer didn’t crack the top five in Supercross last year, but she improved throughout the season and was second at the SMX Playoffs final in Las Vegas, Nevada. He backed that up with another runner-up finish in Anaheim.
Jordon Smith’s third place finish was Factory Triumph’s first podium in its second full season of competition.
